Beneath the band of dogs are glazed, blue in-relief waves. The glazed blue handle begins in a shield, turns with a glazed leaf, and ends with an upturned swirl. The spout features a similar glazed foliate design. Hannah Barlow is among the most collected and famous of Doultons artists and, in 1871, Barlow was the first woman ever hired by the Doulton Lambeth Studio.
Known for her gift for drawing animals, Barlow created her vessels with animals farm sheep, pigs and cows, countryside rabbits, foxes and deer, and exotic lions and kangaroos. Dogs on a Hannah Doulton vessel are a rare find; after a long search, this writer located only 2 dog vessels, both in museum collections.
Doulton & Co was founded by Henry Doulton in 1815 at Lambeth, South London. In 1870, Doulton set up the Lambeth Studio in South London, where Hannah Barlow indulged her passion for animals by keeping her own a private zoo.
